Psidium guajavaL. (Myrtaceae), conhecida como goiabeira, é uma importante espécie vegetal com diversos valores medicinais. Na medicina tradicional, é utilizada para o tratamento de uma série de doenças, como distúrbios gastrointestinais, processos inflamatórios, no tratamento de cáries, em afecções dermatomucosas, como analgésico, em distúrbios respiratórios, dentre outros. As ações podem ser atribuídas à infinidade de compostos bioativos presentes em P. guajava. O objetivo desta revisão é fornecer informações atualizadas sobre os usos etnomedicinais, compostos bioativos, potenciais ações anti-inflamatória e antinociceptiva, além da toxicidade das folhas de P. guajava L. A estratégia de busca utilizada continha o nome científico, sinonímias e nomes populares da espécie vegetal. As bases de dados consultadas foram Cochrane, Medline, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science, Lilacs, SciELO, Google acadêmico e Google books.; além de monografias em compêndios oficiais. Dentre os principais fitoquímicos extraídos de folhas de P. guajava, podem ser citados compostos dos grupos dos flavonoides, taninos, terpenoides, saponinas e óleos essenciais. Estudos in vitro e in vivo sugerem que derivados das folhas da espécie vegetal possuem potencial anti-inflamatório e antinociceptivo. Assim, considerando seu perfil fitoquímico e seus efeitos benéficos, derivados das folhas da espécie podem, potencialmente, serem utilizados no desenvolvimento de produtos farmacêuticos. Contudo, lacunas consideráveis ainda precisam ser preenchidas, como por exemplo, aquelas relacionadas a padronização do método extrativo e no que diz respeito a relação droga:derivado obtida. Ademais, há necessidade de ensaios clínicos mais robustos para estabelecer as doses seguras e a eficácia de P. guajava como agente anti-inflamatório.

Background. Diarrheal illness is the second-most common cause of death in under-five children. Worldwide, it results in about 1.7 billion illnesses and 525,000 deaths among under-five children annually. It is the leading cause of malnutrition among under-five children. Different people use medicinal plants to treat diarrhea. The present study aimed to review the medicinal plants used to treat diarrhea by the people in the Amhara region and to diagnose whether the antidiarrheal activities of the medicinal plants have been confirmed by studies using animal models. Methods. The author searched 21 articles from worldwide databases up to December 2022 using Boolean operators (“AND” and “OR”) and the terms “ethnobotanical studies,” “ethnobiology,” “traditional medicine,” “ethnobotanical knowledge,” and “Amhara region.” Results. From the 21 studies reviewed, 50 plant species grouped into 28 families were reported to treat diarrhea by the people in the Amhara region. The top most used families were Lamiaceae (12%), Fabaceae (8%), Asteraceae, Cucurbitaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Poaceae (6% each). The modes of administration of the plant parts were orally 98.88% and topically 1.12%. The different extracts of 18 (or 36%) of the medicinal plants traditionally used to treat diarrhea by the people in the Amhara region have been proven experimentally in animal models. Conclusions. The people in the Amhara region use different medicinal plants to treat diarrhea. Most of them take the medicinal plants orally. The traditional claim that 60% of medicinal plants are antidiarrheal has been confirmed in in vitro studies.

Cordyline fruticosa, also known to Indonesians as andong, is one of the simplest plants to grow. This plant is commonly used as an ornamental plant in yards, gardens, cemeteries, as well as a road barrier. Although it is primarily grown for ornamental purposes, the leaves of this plant empirically have been used to treat diarrhea and dysentery. The goal of this study was to determine what chemicals are present in andong leaves, as well as to see if an extract derived from the leaves has any activity against microbes that cause diarrhea, such as Shigella dysenteriae and Candida albicans. Andong leaves were extracted using two different methods, namely maceration with 96% ethanol as a solvent and infusion with distilled water heated to 90 °C. Phytochemicals screening test was conducted qualitatively using the color-change reaction method. While antimicrobial activity test was performed using the disk diffusion method and continued with the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test using the solid dilution method. Phytochemicals screening revealed that the ethanol extract and infusion of andong leaves contained flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenols. The antimicrobial activity results showed that the ethanol extract and infusion of andong leaves inhibited the growth of S. dysenteriae but had no effect on C. albicans. These findings suggest that andong leaves have the potential to treat diarrhea caused by S. dysentriae, but not by C. albicans.
