Current research and future perspectives on human factors and ergonomics in Industry 4.0

Abstract: The journey toward Industry 4.0 and the increasing implementation of Cyber Physical Systems are evoking changes in human work and work organization, thus, creating new challenges and opportunities. To take advantage of these opportunities and deal with the challenges, we must gain a holistic understanding of the emerging socio-technical interactions and apply new human-centric approaches and methods when introducing new digital technologies and designing Industry 4.0-enabled work systems. In this paper, we pre… Show more

“…Rojas and Rauch [27] identified similar keywords by conducting a term frequency analysis as part of their systematic review that was based on the database Scopus. Kadir et al [33] again identified similar keywords using a systematic literature review, however, their sample size was small compared to ours due to their specific focus on human factors and ergonomics in Industry 4.0. Overall, our results are in line with available systematic reviews on the research are of Industry 4.0.…”

“…Within the scope of "Industry 4.0," the shift in the landscape of a typical manufacturing shop floor, i.e., from very hands-on, manual labor, interpersonal communications, and judgments or actions primarily driven by human experience, to a very decentralized environment with CPPS including advanced automations, cloud computing, IOT-AI-enabled technologies, driving actionable insights into the manufacturing process is forthcoming. This in turn would drive major improvements benefitting the manufacturing workforce from being production centric to data driven and tech oriented in three distinctive ways, [75,76] which are as discussed below.…”

“…The introduction of new advanced technologies into the manufacturing system deploys new level interactions between humans, machines, materials, and objects, consequently changing the role of employees. It is vital to discover and identify the new challenge in human work and ergonomics in Industry 4.0 [111]. European Framework Directive on Safety and Health at Work (Directive 89/391 EEC) emphasize the necessity of including safety and health as a part in the management process by enforcing employers consider works are safer and healthier [97].…”
