Current Scenario of Pathogen Detection Techniques in Agro-Food Sector

Abstract: Over the past-decade, agricultural products (such as vegetables and fruits) have been reported as the major vehicles for foodborne diseases, which are limiting food resources. The spread of infectious diseases due to foodborne pathogens poses a global threat to human health and the economy. The accurate and timely detection of infectious disease and of causative pathogens is crucial in the prevention and treatment of disease. Negligence in the detection of pathogenic substances can be catastrophic and lead to … Show more

“…Real‐time quantitative PCR (qPCR), one of the most commonly used PCR methods, monitors continuously the PCR products formation throughout the reaction by measuring fluorescent signal intensity (Law et al., 2015). However, the qPCR method requires expensive instruments such as trained personnel, real‐time amplification monitoring devices with thermal cycle (Nehra et al., 2022). Multiplex PCR (mPCR) can be used for the simultaneous detection of multiple gene targets (Law et al., 2015).…”

“…3,4 The conventional method for bacterial detection is plate culturing. 5 Despite being relatively inexpensive and reliable, plate culturing is time-consuming, commonly 2 to 3 days, 6 and each positive culture is labor-intensive. 7 Moreover, injured or nonculturable microorganisms could result in insufficient detection capacity of plate culturing.…”

“…The copyright holder for this preprint this version posted January 8, 2023. ; https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.01.06.523046 doi: bioRxiv preprint demands high throughput to maximize time and cost efficiency. Integrated biological systems like microfluidic chips can meet these criteria 6 . With a high degree of automation, many of these portable devices can analyze a large number of samples at once and output detection signals qualitatively 14 .…”
