Abstract. Geothermal energy is considered as a strategic and sustainable source of renewable energy that can be effectively managed in several economic sectors. In Poland, despite the abundant potential of such resources, its share in the energy mix of renewable energy sources remains insubstantial. The utilisation of geothermal resources in Poland is related to the hydrogeothermal resources, however, numerous researches related to petrogeothermal energy resources are being performed. The utilisation of each type of energy, including geothermal, has an impact on the natural environment. In case of the effective development of geothermal energy resources, many environmental benefits are pointed out. The primary one is the extraction of clean, green energy that is characterised by the zeroemission rate of pollutants into the atmosphere, what considering the current environmental pollution in many Polish cities remains the extremely important issue. On the other hand, the utilisation of geothermal energy might influence the natural environment negatively. Beginning from the phase of drilling, which strongly interferes with the local landscape or acoustic climate, to the stage of energy exploitation. It should be noted that the efficient and sustainable use of geothermal energy resources is closely linked with the current law regulations at national and European level.

Geothermal energy is a type of energy stored in the form of heat beneath the surface of the solid earth. The use of geothermal energy depends on the temperature of the geothermal fluid. If this temperature is below 180º, then the most efficient use of the geothermal sources is in domestic heating or for heating the water. If the temperature of the geothermal fluid is 180º or above, then the energy associated with the geothermal fluid can be used for electricity generation. There is no geographical restriction to the exploitation of geothermal energy, as the source is present everywhere. However, some regions benefit from more favorable conditions that allow an earlier development of geothermal resources, under more economical conditions, using current available technology. As a consequence, the majority of the geothermal power plants in Europe are located in Italy, Iceland, and Turkey, where unusually high temperatures at comparatively limited depth dominate.

Mogilno-Lodz Trough is located in central Poland. It is structural basin filled with Triassic-to-Quaternary sediments. Lower Jurassic formations in Poland have one of the best conditions for the heating purposes. Presently, on the area of the Trough, no geothermal plant operates, which utilises geothermal waters from Lower Jurassic formations. Sustainable use of geothermal waters covers, e.g., effective use of thermal energy from waters, before they are injected back to the deposit. Such sustainable use can be achieved in cascaded systems, utilising thermal energy of waters, which gradually lose temperature at following stages of cascaded systems. Geothermal waters and energy occurring in Lower Jurassic formations in Mogilno-Lodz Trough have been analysed in terms of chemical composition and temperature parameters. A dominant type of water is chloridesodium waters, with specific components contents, such as iodine, bromine, and iron. Lower Jurassic formations are deposited at different depths, which affects, to a high extent, water mineralization and temperature, as well as some elements contents. It has been demonstrated which parameters are decisive about a possibility of using them at particular stages of a cascaded system and where one should expect to find suitable conditions for particular applications.
