Current Status of Putative Animal Sources of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Humans: Wildlife, Domestic Animals and Pets

Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 is currently considered to have emerged from a bat coronavirus reservoir. However, the real natural cycle of this virus remains to be elucidated. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to novel opportunities for SARS-CoV-2 transmission between humans and susceptible animal species. In silico and in vitro evaluation of the interactions between the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and eucaryotic angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor have tentatively predicted susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection … Show more

“…Moreover, it is not because minks have been eliminated that the risk of the emergence of variants in susceptible species disappears. SARS-CoV-2 circulates between susceptible species and sooner or later the question of domestic animals (ferrets and other animal such as cats, dogs, or rabbits) will arise with the possibility of new variants emerging from these species ( Fenollar et al, 2021 ; Maurin et al, 2021 ; Van Aart et al, 2021 ). Cats are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection ( Bosco-Lauth et al, 2020 ; Gaudreault et al, 2020 ; Leroy et al, 2020 ; Shi et al, 2020 ).…”

“…No sign of natural infection or seroconversion was found in any of the involved species [ 33 ]. However, based on in vitro and in vivo experiments, the recognition of susceptible animal species as potential hosts and reservoirs of SARS CoV-2 is not only dependent on the presence of adequate cell receptors but also relies on other factors, such as animal body temperature, population density and group-living of animals as well as the possibility of human to animal direct or indirect contact [ 34 ].…”

“…Under experimental conditions, coronaviruses demonstrated the capability to infect several animal species where ferrets [23], cats [23,24], hamsters [25], and rhesus macaques [26,27] showed evidence of virus replication in their respiratory tract. Additionally, cats and dogs in contact with infected humans have been identified as SARS-CoV-2 positive [28,29].…”
