Current status, prospects, and implications of renewable energy for achieving sustainable development goals in Nepal

Abstract: The energy mix in Nepal is currently dominated by the traditional and inefficient use of biomass (66.54%) and fossil fuels (27.24%), and energy poverty remains extremely high. This paper reviews relevant literature to provide an overview of the current renewable energy status and energy mix in Nepal, and to discuss prospects for the country to achieve a sustainable energy transition. Nepal-specific papers from peerreviewed sources and other agency and academic reports were included insofar as these discussed r… Show more

“…In order to capture the role of energy transition toward environmental quality and sustainable development prospects leading emerging economies, Onifade and Alola (2022) used the panel ARDL and the result gathered from this study disclosed that green energy is crucial toward achieving carbon neutrality. Can and Ahmed (2022) for 16 EU countries and Lohani et al (2022) for Nepal reached on the similar conclusion that renewable energy is a significant factor in promoting sustainable development. However, Koseoglu et al (2022) analyzed the data of top-20 green economies and conclude that green technologies are the prominent factor to upsurge the sustainable development.…”

“…These studies can be divided into the following branches. The first branch focuses on the impact of the development and utilization of green energy on carbon emissions, including photovoltaic, wind power, hydrogen energy and other clean energy (Lohani et al, 2022; Saboori & Mehrjerdi, 2022); The second branch studies the impact of energy conservation and emission abatement technologies on carbon emission, such as CCUS. (Li et al, 2016; Smith et al, 2016); The third branch investigates the effects of environmental policy instruments, such as carbon taxes, carbon emissions trading, subsidies, and so forth.…”

“…Global efforts to achieve the sustainable development agenda are challenged by several factors, among which is the persistent increase in environmental degradation. To address this issue, renewable energy is increasingly regarded as essential to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change (Fotis & Polemis, 2018; Kuriqi et al, 2019; Lohani et al, 2022; Lu et al, 2020; Mazzucato & Semieniuk, 2018; Tabrizian, 2019). An increase in renewable energy consumption can foster energy security, sustainable economic development, and economic growth (Alper & Oguz, 2016; Destek, 2016; Destek & Aslan, 2017; Ojong, 2022a; Okumus et al, 2021; Rafindadi & Ozturk, 2017a).…”
