Cutaneous Sarcoidosis

Abstract: Sarcoidosis is a chronic, multisystem, inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology that is characterized by noncaseating granulomas that impair normal organ functioning. Sarcoidosis predominantly affects the lungs, but the skin is often cited as the second most frequently involved organ. Cutaneous manifestations of sarcoidosis are highly variable and ongoing research seeks to better understand the relationship between clinical morphology and disease prognosis. Skin findings in patients with sarcoidosis can be “s… Show more

“…According to studies, skin is the second or third most commonly affected organ in sarcoidosis, present in up to one-third of the patients [84]. Cutaneous sarcoidosis lesions are frequently the inaugural signs of the disease and sarcoidosis can remain an isolated dermatological condition in more than 30% of cases [85].…”

“…• Most common morphology of the specific cutaneous manifestations of sarcoidosis Erythema nodosum is mostly seen in LS and is associated with transient disease that does not require treatment. Other non-specific cutaneous findings of sarcoidosis include calcinosis cutis, clubbing and prurigo [84].…”

“…According to PubMed published data by Karolyn A. Wanat, 25-30% of sarcoidosis cases had skin manifestations. The highest incidence of cutaneous sarcoidosis occurs in Black American females [ 5 ]. Cutaneous sarcoidosis lesions could occur in any area of the skin but they are more pronounced in previously manipulated areas as in tattoos and scars [ 5 ].…”

“…4 This difference is explained by the greater propensity of injected silicone to migrate, making it challenging to fully remove surgically, as compared with the silicone gel in implants. 2,3 Akin to the treatment algorithm for cutaneous sarcoidosis, 5 our results suggest that systemic steroids, hydroxychloroquine, and tetracyclines should be considered as first-line agents for SGs from injectable silicone, followed by tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors for refractory disease. Study limitations include the small sample size and retrospective methodology.…”
