Cutout Types Analysis on Picohydro Pelton Turbine

Abstract: Pico hydro is a simple electricity generation technology and can be applied in remote areas that do not have access to electricity. Pico hydro systems produce power less than or equal to 5 kW. Pelton turbine is an impulse turbine frequently used in a pico hydro system. Pelton turbine has a cut-out in its buckets that prevent the water jet leak from the tip of the bucket into the next bucket. The study has been done to explain the effects of bucket geometry on energy conversion from water flow into kinetic ener… Show more

“…The work focused more on efficient exploration of the design space and does not explicitly mention the improvement achieved in the performance as compared to the existing designs. Budiarso et al [57] tested 4 different types of cut-outs namely w, v, u and ω. Simulations on these cut-out types were run with a popular CFD solver at different flow velocities and different bucket positions. Torque, rotational velocity and power generated at different angles at different flow rates were analysed via ANOVA block design.…”

“…Three-dimensional turbulence calculations can accurately predict the actual flow of fluids [139][140][141][142]. In earlier research, the standard k-ω turbulence model was the most widely used for the Pelton turbine, and the RNG k-ω model was also used [143][144][145][146][147][148]. In recent years, scholars have recognized the SST k-ω turbulence model and widely use it to calculate high-speed turbulence for a rotating bucket.…”

“…Pico-hydro is a simple method of power generation that can be used in remote locations where electricity is not available. Based on Budiarso et al [20], pico-hydro systems generate power of less than or equal to 5 kW, which could provide a remote community with enough energy to run light bulbs, radios and televisions, and other appliances. This system does not always need a high-rise building.…”
