Cyclic Host Liquids for Facile and High-Yield Synthesis of [2]Rotaxanes

Abstract: We developed "cyclic host liquids (CHLs)" as a new type of solvent. The CHLs are a nonvolatile liquid over a wide temperature range, are biocompatible and recyclable, have high thermal stability, and are miscible with many organic solvents. Compared with typical complexation systems, the CHL system is extremely efficient for maintaining host-guest complexation because an additional solvent is not required. Based on the efficient host-guest complexation in the CHL system, we demonstrated synthesis of [2]rotaxan… Show more

“…Recently, solvent-free, nonvolatile, room-temperature functional molecular liquids (FMLs) 7 have emerged as a new generation of liquid materials. With an excellent processability, free deformability, and high thermal stability, FMLs have gained extensive interest in wide areas, including luminescence 814 , photoconduction 1518 , molecular recognition 19, 20 , energy storage 21, 22 , and biological systems 23, 24 . Aiming for applications in flexible and bendable optoelectronics, we 810, 15, 16, 25, 26 and others 1113, 21, 2732 have developed the alkyl-π engineering strategy 33 to prepare various alkylated-π FMLs by attaching bulky and flexible alkyl chains to optoelectronically active π-conjugated units.…”
