Cyclohexane and Beyond: Tangled Hexagons and Octahedra

Abstract

In memoriam Jack D. Dunitz.Inspired by Dunitz's treatment of the geometry and flexibility of cyclohexane, we describe some ways in which hexagons and octahedra can become self-entangled and linked. Connections to topics such as flexibility of frameworks, tensegrity structures, and Borromean rings are indicated.
