Cyclotron emission effect on CMB spectral distortions

Abstract: Abstract. We investigated the role of the cyclotron emission (CE) associated to cosmic magnetic fields (MF) on the evolution of cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectral distortions. We computed the photon and energy injection rates by including spontaneous and stimulated emission and absorption. These CE rates have been compared with those of bremsstrahlung (BR) and double Compton scattering (DC), for realistic CMB distorted spectra at various cosmic epochs. For reasonable MF strengths we found that the CE co… Show more

“…On the other hand, the cyclotron process is only relevant at very long wavelengths. Thus, for realistic shapes of distorted spectra and PMFs with amplitudes compatible with current constraints, the cyclotron contribution is found to be much less important than radiative Compton and bremsstrahlung contributions in re-establishing a blackbody spectrum (Burigana & Zizzo 2006) and also extremely small in generating a polarized signal (Zizzo & Burigana 2005). Thus, the current constraints derived from COBE-FIRAS present good prospects for possible future observations (Jedamzik et al 2000;Kunze & Komatsu 2014;Chluba et al 2015) while polarization anisotropies directly induced by PMFs are not significantly affected by the cyclotron process associated with PMFs.…”
