“…Its rhizomes have been used in traditional Chinese medicine as estrogenic and anti-inflammatory agents for the treatment of stomachache and bowel disorders, dysmenorrhea, and menstrual disorders. [1] It has recently received much attention due to the broad range of biological activities, such as anti-diabetic activity, [2] acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity, [3] anti-diarrhoeal activity, [4] protein glycation inhibitory activity, [5] as well as inhibition of nitric oxide and superoxide production. [6] Sesquiterpenes have been considered as its characteristic secondary metabolites and should be responsible for those activities.…”

“…[6] Sesquiterpenes have been considered as its characteristic secondary metabolites and should be responsible for those activities. Previous phytochemical investigations have described the presence of sesquiterpenes with diverse skeletons such as patchoulane, rotundane, eudesmane, guaiane, cadinane, and caryophyllene types in C. rotundus L. [7,8] As a part of our research program that involves studying naturally occurring sesquiterpenes, [9,10] two guaiane type sesquiterpenes (1, 2) and four patchoulane type sesquiterpenes (3)(4)(5)(6) were isolated from the rhizomes of C. rotundus L., of which 1 and 3 were new compounds. This paper describes the structural determination and the complete assignments of 1 H and 13 C NMR data of those sesquiterpenes.…”

“…The rhizome of Cyperus is rich in essential oils that contain pinene, a little cineole, terpenes, and a new alcohol called isociprol. Several chemical components have been isolated from ethanol extract of C. rotundus rhizome and some of these chemicals possess anti-AChE activity [28]. Gingko biloba extract significantly inhibit the AChE activity in the brain.…”

“…The tuber part of C. rotundus is a commonly used traditional Oriental medicine for treatment of dysmenorrhea and other menstrual irregularities. This herb is also widely used as an analgesic, nerve tonic, nootropic, sedative, anti-spasmodic, anti-malarial, antidiarrheal and a reliever of stomach disorders (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Previous pharmacological investigations indicated that the extracts and/ or components of C. rotundus rhizomes have marked hypotensive, anti-mutagenic, anti-obese, neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic effects (18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26).…”
