“…Since these early theories, it is apparent that there are several permutations on the renal cysts and RCC theme that merit separation (33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40). These are noted in Table 3 with comments on their significance.…”

“…Prior to surgical exploration and pathological evaluation, it is diYcult to identify MCRCC with conWdence. The diVerential diagnosis of a complex, enhancing, cystic renal abnormality includes a pseudocyst stemming from hemorrhage and necrosis of RCC, cystic necrosis of Wilms' tumor, hemorrhage and infection of a simple cyst, renal impairment caused by tuberous sclerosis, as well as multilocular cystic nephroma, renal abscess, and xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (Koga et al 2000;Ooi et al 1996;Bielsa et al 1998). In our series, most cases of MCRCC (90.3%) at our institute were found when they were examined for reasons other than the typical symptoms of renal carcinoma such as hematuria.…”

“…Bielsa et al (10) noted that because cystic RCC was usually identified at earlier stages, had a slower growth rate, and was therefore associated with a better prognosis and longer survival than conventional RCC, a conservative surgical approach should be the treatment of choice whenever technically feasible. Ooi et al (11) reported the high percentage of stage-1 disease (72.7%, 8/11) in cystic RCCs.…”
