Cystosarcoma phyllodes: Our institutional experience

Abstract: Twenty-six patients of Cystosarcoma phyllodes, treated between July 1994 and July 2001, were analysed retrospectively. Median age at presentation was 38 years (range 13-61 years). Mean size of the lesion was 6 cm. There were 77% left-sided lesions and 23% right-sided lesions. Histologically, 58% lesions were benign, 11% borderline and 31% malignant lesions. All patients underwent definitive surgical procedure in the form of wide local excision or mastectomy. Four patients received postoperative radiotherapy. M… Show more

“…Given an approximately 10% incidence of chest wall recurrence after mastectomy, evidence that adjuvant radiation can prevent local recurrence after margin positive mastectomies, and the data we have now described regarding the effectiveness of adjuvant radiation after margin-negative breast-conserving resections, it seems reasonable to consider adjuvant postmastectomy radiation in these patients. 6,11,3436 …”

“…[13,14] Although Confavreux et al failed to demonstrate any improvement of the overall survival in cases in which adjuvant radiation therapy was associated, some other authors sustain the benefit of this oncologic adjuvant treatment. [15,16] The benefits of complete R0 resection at the time of surgery has been widely demonstrated in clinical studies and remains one of the most important factors which increases the overall survival. [16][17][18][19] In Popescu's study conducted between 1960 and 1989 in Fundeni Clinical Hospital, 19 cases with benign (15 cases) and malignant (4 cases) PT were included.…”
