“…An increased number of hepatocytes and binucleate and polynucleated cells were observed in fish liver treated with 50 and 100 g sediment after 2 weeks. This agrees with results of Engwall et al (1994), who found numerous mitotic figures in liver after microinjection of an extract of PCB-contaminated sediment into rainbow trout.…”

“…They probably exert most of their toxic effects, with variable potency, through the Ah receptor (Safe 1990;Ahlborg et al 1992). One of the most sensitive biochemical responses to these compounds is the induction of specific cytochrome P450 1A1 in the liver (measured as ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase [EROD] activity) (Safe 1990;Kopponen et al 1994;Engwall et al 1994). These observations validate the use of enzyme induction in vivo and in vitro as a rapid and simple bioassay for assessing the toxic effect of dioxin-like compounds.…”

“…The ultrastructural "ndings by TEM of hepatocytes exposed in lower dosage TCDD for 120 days were consistent with the results obtained by Norrgren et al (1993) and Engwall et al (1994), who injected PCBs to sac-fry and examined hepatic alterations.…”

“…This conclusion is consistent with the bioaccumulation regularity of TCDD in environment. Therefore, complemented with chemical analysis, this EROD bioassay can be used for monitoring long-term toxic impact of low dosage TCDD, and possesses the advantages of rapid results and cost-e$ciency.The ultrastructural "ndings by TEM of hepatocytes exposed in lower dosage TCDD for 120 days were consistent with the results obtained by Norrgren et al (1993) and Engwall et al (1994), who injected PCBs to sac-fry and examined hepatic alterations. …”
