Cytokinin perception in potato: new features of canonical players

Abstract: Potato genes for putative cytokinin receptors were cloned and expressed. The proteins displayed properties of cytokinin receptors, and their expression in planta was organ specific and sensitive to growth conditions and sucrose content.

“…CisZ has low cytokinin activity, its affinity for potato CK-receptors is approx. 40-50-fold lower than the affinity of tZ or iP 18 . CisZ-type CKs often occur at a relatively high concentration in plant organs with limited growth (storage organs) 19,20 and can attenuate the cytokinin signaling wherein by competing with active cytokinins.…”

“…The effect of each CK ligand depends not only on its structure and concentration, however it also may be species-specific. Various CKs show modified ligand affinity for their receptors, e.g., in A. thaliana , Brasica napus , maize and potato [22,149,150,151]. The diverse effects of particular CKs regarding physiological responses to exogenous application have also been documented.…”

“…The cytosolic part of the receptor includes the catalytic module, which consists of HK-dimerization (HisKA or DHpD) and H-ATPase (CAD) domains [6,7]. In addition, the receptor possesses the receiver-like (RLD or REC-like) and receiver (RD or REC) domains (considered together as a receiver module), which are located at the C-terminus of the HK protein [8,9].…”
