Cytotoxic ceramides from the Red Sea sponge Spheciospongia vagabunda

Abstract: Extracts of Egyptian marine organisms from the Red Sea were screened for their anticancer activity using sulforhodamine B assay. The extract of the Red Sea sponge Spheciospongia vagabunda possessed promising anticancer activity against HepG2 (liver cancer cell line) and MCF-7 (breast cancer cell line). Isolation of three new ceramides: N-[(2S,3S,4R)-1,3,4-trihydroxytetradecan-2-yl] tridecanamide (1), (R)-2 0 -hydroxy-N-[(2S,3S,4R)-1,3,4-trihydroxypentacosan-2-yl] octadecanamide (2) and (R,Z)-2 0 -hydroxy-N-[(2… Show more

“…The anticancer activity of ceramides was previously reported against different malignant cell lines [31][32][33][34][35]. The selection of the human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell line was based on the global prevalence of breast cancer as well as common side effects of anticancer drugs that may be relatively ineffective against some phases [36].…”

“…The cytotoxicity and the antiapoptotic effects of ceramides and cerebrosides against a wide array of cancer cell lines have been reported in several studies [ 12 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. In addition, the crude extract of H. spinifera has been reported to possess potent cytotoxic potential against MCF7 with an IC 50 value of 4.58 µg/mL [ 12 ].…”

“…The cytotoxicity levels of ceramides and cerebrosides on wide array of cancer cell lines have previously been reported [42][43][44]. SJG-2 is one example of a ganglioside molecular species recently isolated from Stichopus japonicas possessing neurogenic activity against the rat pheochromocytoma cell line PC12 [45].…”
