Cytotoxic Effect of Ethanol Extract of Convolvulus arvensis L (Convolvulaceae) on Lymphoblastic Leukemia Jurkat Cells

Abstract: of the extract to determine cell viability, cell proliferation, apoptosis using Trypan blue exclusion assay, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay and fluorescent activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis, respectively. Results: Trypan blue exclusion assay and MTS assay results indicate that the ethanol extract decreased the number of living cells in a concentration-dependent fashion. The results of FACS analysis showed that the lowest concentration of… Show more

“…The ethanol extract of aerial parts of C. arvensis decreased the number of living lymphoblastic leukemia, Jurkat cells, in a dose‐dependent manner (10–100 μg/ml). This extract induced apoptosis in Jurkat cells especially at 10 μg/ml (85.3%; Saleem et al, ).…”

“…The crude alkaloids extract from the leaves of C. arvensis distracted the microtubule network of a mice cell line (CHO), an invasive metastasis cell after 60 min of exposure in a concentration as little as 20 μg/ml and caused apoptosis at up to 80 and 100 μg/ml (Saleem et al, ). The same extract at 1 mg/kg/bw efficiently inhibited CHO cell line tumor growth to 97.1% in mice after 3 weeks of treatment compared with that of untreated control animals (Saleem et al, ).…”

“…Many plants have recently be reported with anticancer activity like Casuarina equisetifolia (Shafiq et al, 2014), Aspergillus niger (Channabasavaet al, 2014) and Convolvulus arvensis (Saleem et al, 2014).…”

“…Natural products may be the good source of new therapeutic agents (Saleem et al, 2014). C. intybus has previously been shown to be cytotoxic against breast cancer MCF-7 (Dahab and Afifi, 2007), prostate cancer LNCaP, amelanotic melanoma C32 and renal adenocarcinoma ACHN (Conforti et al, 2008).…”
