“…In many cellular systems, stimulation of death receptors disrupts anti‐apoptosis pathways (187). Given the importance of apoptosis in allorecognition in Cnidaria (188), it was worth looking at the possible conservation of this feature at the level of very primitive organisms. indeed shows the presence of such domain in diploblastic organisms and in more advanced phyla as well.…”

“…True tissue fusions between allogeneic adult colonies are not common in the Cnidaria, although they have been documented in the Hydrozoa (Hauenschild, 1954(Hauenschild, , 1956Buss et al, 1985;Shenk, 1991;Frank and Rinkevich, 1994). Most histocompatibility related studies in the Cnidaria (reviewed by Leddy and Green, 1991) have been carried out on scleractinian corals (Potts, 1976;Hildemann et al, 1977;Criens, 1982 Rinkevich andLang and Chornesky, 1990;Chadwick-Furman and Rinkevich, 1994;Rinkevich et al, 1994), hydrozoans (Hauenschild, 1954(Hauenschild, , 1956Ivker, 1972;Miiller et al, 1983;Buss et al, 1984Buss et al, , 1985Bosch and David, 1986;Lange et al, 1989;Frank and Rinkevich, 1994) and gorgonians (Theodor, 1970;Theodor and Senelar, 1975;Theodor, 1976;Bigger and Runyan, 1979;Lasker and Coffroth, 1985;Salter-Cid and Bigger, 1991). Little is known, however, about allogeneic responses in soft bodied alcyonaceans.…”

“…The gorgonians (Anthozoa; Alcyonaria) are an Order of soft corals that includes sea fans and sea whips. Theodor's extensive studies (Theodor, 1966(Theodor, , 1969(Theodor, , 1970(Theodor, , 1976Serre and Theodor, 1967;Theodor and Carriere, 1975;Theodor and Senelar, 1975) of Eunicella stricta and Lophogorgia sarmentosa, and the preliminary work of Bigger and Runyan ( 1979) on Leptogorgia virgulata, Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae and Plexuraflexulosa, have identified some of the major characteristics of histocompatibility in the Order. Naturally occurring grafts within the same colony (autografts) occur in field, and all experimentally induced autografts rapidly fuse within 24 h. (Theodor, 1970;Bigger and Runyan, 1979).…”
