DANE: Fostering Creativity in and through Biologically Inspired Design

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper, we present an initial attempt at systemizing knowledge of biological systems from an engineering perspective. In particular, we describe an interactive knowledge-based design environment called DANE that uses the Structure-Behavior-Function (SBF) schema for capturing the functioning of biological systems. We present preliminary results from deploying DANE in an interdisciplinary class on biologically inspired design, indicating that designers found the SBF schema useful for conceptuali… Show more

“…Its complexity further increases, and often conflicts arise, when integrating a number of strategies from different systems to achieve a design solution [50,51]. Several biomimetic approaches have emerged in the last decade to assist the transitions between domains [52][53][54]. Yet, clear indications to architectural design are still limited.…”

“…F(S) abstraction hierarchy, and (5) provides an ontology for representing its structures, functions and behaviors. DANE also enables designers to construct and refine StructureBehavior-Function (SBF) models of biological and engineering systems [8]. In other work on learning about complex ecological systems in middle school science, we have found that construction of SBF models enables students to acquire conceptual understanding of the systems [9].…”

“…In BID, biological knowledge is applied in the technological context through biological analogy [85,86]. Biological knowledge is transformed into technological designs by using four approaches, namely, biological terms comprehension, biological escape, variable transformation, and analogical transformation.…”
