Metrological traceability is essential to ensure the reliability of calibration tests. Calibration certificates usually include information on only one upper-level reference standard. As metrological traceability is multi-layered, generally there is no method available for end users to instantly confirm the traceability from the reference standard to a primary standard. This study focuses on the Ethereum blockchain, which has both tamper resistance and high availability, as a digital data management method. To improve the transparency and reliability of calibration tests, a smart contract that traces back to the primary standard is proposed. Consequently, it is confirmed that end users can instantly obtain traceability information. In addition, the execution of smart contracts requires transaction fees. Here, the calculation of the transaction fees is organized, and the traceability management system is discussed from a cost-effective perspective in the field of metrology.

ZusammenfassungIn zunehmend vernetzten Systemen erstreckt sich die gesamte Datenwertschöpfungskette über eine Vielzahl an Systemen, wobei unterschiedliche Akteure mit unterschiedlichen und möglicherweise gegensätzlichen Interessen beteiligt sind. Es ist daher erforderlich, die Prozesse der Datenerfassung, Verarbeitung und Speicherung so abzusichern, dass Manipulationen durch externe Angriffe oder einzelne Akteure erkannt werden können. Dieser Beitrag legt den Fokus auf drei unterschiedliche technische Maßnahmen, durch welche Vertrauen in die ausgetauschten Daten selbst und letztendlich auch zwischen unterschiedlichen Akteuren hergestellt werden kann: Maßnahmen zur Kommunikationssicherheit schützen Daten während des Transports, digitale Kalibrierzertifikate erlauben eine Aussage über die Genauigkeit der erfassten Daten, Distributed-Ledger-Technologien wie zum Beispiel eine Blockchain erfassen Aktionen sowie beteiligte Akteure und legen diese Informationen manipulationsgeschützt ab. Dieser Beitrag bezieht sich auf das Forschungsprojekt GEMIMEG-II, das durch das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (BMWK) gefördert wird.

In the present paper, the digital transformation in metrology is discussed, which is revolutionizing the world and is one of the most interesting developments in science & technology today. The study also discusses, how current technologies like Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Cloud computing, and more significantly digital twins would become synonymous with digital metrology, thus bolstering the future of manufacturing industries. The basic objective of any digital transformation initiative is to enhance the current processes, while each one will have its own unique set of objectives. As metrology is considered as the main pillar of Quality Infrastructure (QI), the digital transformation of metrology requires a holistic approach for all stakeholders working within the advanced QI of a country or economy.
