Data‐Driven Identification of Hydrogen Sulfide Scavengers

Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important signaling molecule whose up‐ and down‐regulation have specific biological consequences. Although significant advances in H2S up‐regulation, by the development of H2S donors, have been achieved in recent years, precise H2S down‐regulation is still challenging. The lack of potent/specific inhibitors for H2S‐producing enzymes contributes to this problem. We expect the development of H2S scavengers is an alternative approach to address this problem. Since chemical sensors and… Show more

“…Systemic administration of SS20, one of these sulfonyl azide-based H 2 S scavengers, prevented death in mice subjected to acute H 2 S poisoning (Fig. 5) [90]. These results suggest that H 2 S scavengers may function as effective antidotes for H 2 S poisoning.…”

“…To better understand the role of sulfide catabolism and potentially develop countermeasures against H 2 S poisoning, we recently launched a project to develop novel H 2 S-specific scavengers in collaboration with Xian laboratory [90]. To the best of our knowledge, specific H 2 S scavengers to control endogenous H 2 S levels have not been explored or reported.…”

“…anti-cancer vs . pro-cancer ( Wu et al., 2017 ; Yang et al., 2019b ; Wu et al., 2019 ). Those studies on H 2 S’s anti-HCC activity, we think, are probably due to the generation of sulfane sulfur from Na 2 S/NaHS.…”

“…Additionally, some endogenous RSS, like cystine, cysteine, homocysteine, methionine, glutathione, and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), are not sulfane sulfur per se , but can be metabolized to produce sulfane sulfur ( Jackson et al., 2012 ). However, the effects of these RSS on cancer therapy including HCC are contradictory, as both anti-cancer ( Iciek et al., 2001 ; Iciek et al., 2012 ) and pro-cancer ( Pan et al., 2014 ; Zhen et al., 2018 ; Yang et al., 2019b ) activities have been reported, which hinders the sulfur-based HCC therapy.…”

“…This mixture was then combined with a Fenton reaction solution containing H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ . Following incubation for 15 min at room temperature, MB absorption was measured, and MB scavenging ability was quantified as follows: MB scavenging ability (%) = (A sample /A MB ) * 100%, where A MB and A sample , respectively, correspond to MB absorbance without further treatment and following Fe-Cur NCPs addition [42].…”
