“…22 In addition, there is considerable waste of 5-or 7-day RT-PLTs because of inability to accurately predict demand, the time needed for preparation, and infectious disease testing. 23 As a result a significant number of outdated units are discarded every year making PLTs expensive to process and maintain. Even though overproduction occurs the short shelf life and unpredictable need has resulted in annual shortages.…”

“…This may partly explain why all blood centers except two in this study produced PLTs by two methods to enhance their responsiveness. PLT products are short‐aged for various reasons, and outdating has been considered the main reason for discarded PLTs 10,12 , 22,24 , 26 . Much effort has been directed to developing methods to allow prolonged PLT storage, such as new preservation solutions, cold storage, 27 and the implementation of bacterial screening followed by extended shelf life 7,8 , 10,28 .…”

“…Therefore, in the USA the use of APC increased by 34% between 1987 and 1989 [44] and by 50% between 1989 and 1991. In 1990 30-40% of the therapeutical doses of PC derived from apheresis [45]. In Germany, 50% of all transfused platelets in 1996 were APC [46].…”
