Data, problems, heuristics and results in cognitive metaphor research

Abstract: Cognitive metaphor research is characterised by the diversity of rival theories. Starting from this observation, the paper focuses on the problem of how the unity and diversity of cognitive theories of metaphor can be accounted for. The first part of the paper outlines a suitable metascientific approach which emerges as a modification of B. von Eckardt's notion of research framework. In the second part, by the help of this approach, some aspects of the sophisticated relationship between Lakoff and Johnson's, G… Show more

“…Over this same period, numerous books have considered metaphor from a variety of perspectives, generally emphasizing linguistic approaches (e.g., Cohen, 2008; Dancygier & Sweetser, 2014; Gibbs, 2008; Goatly, 1997; Kittay, 1987; Kövecses, 2005, 2010; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Lakoff & Turner, 1989; Ricœur, 1977; Ritchie, 2013; Stern, 2000). But although reviews directed at selected subtopics have appeared (Hoffman & Kemper, 1987; Kertész, Rákosi, & Csatár, 2012; Landau et al, 2010; Meier & Robinson, 2004; Patterson, 2016), the field has not been the focus of a broad review of theories and evidence. Accordingly, the present article aims to provide a critical review of major theories of metaphor comprehension in light of empirical evidence that has accumulated over the past four decades.…”

“…This study was conducted on the basis of blitz-polls on the significance of the Ossetian language, slogans of cultural and educational events on Ossetian Language Day, materials of speeches in the genre of congratulations to the leaders of the Parliament of the Republics of North Ossetia and South Ossetia with the involvement of texts of speeches and meetings of the first persons of the state. The leading methods of the study were the linguophilosophical approach, cognitive, discursive, and contextual approaches, the method of conceptual analysis and interpretative analysis (Boroditsky, 2000;Kertész et al, 2012).…”

“…The envelope "is not simply the decoration of the content, which remains unchanged: the envelope and the content give in their interaction a richer meaning than each of these components taken separately. They emphasise that comparison is a psychological process, and metaphor is a type of language use (Kertész et al, 2012). It should be noted that researchers do not understand comparison in the same way, namely: the combination of two objects for the purpose of their joint functioning; examining two objects to identify their similarities or differences (Burmeister, 2005).…”
