Data report: clay mineral assemblages in the upper Shikoku Basin, results from IODP Expedition 333, Sites C0011 and C0012

Abstract: This report summarizes the results of X-ray diffraction analyses of core samples from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Sites C0011 and C0012, offshore southwest Japan. We analyzed 211 specimens (<2 µm size fraction) recovered during IODP Expedition 333. Most of those samples come from the uppermost hemipelagic/pyroclastic facies (Unit I) of the Shikoku Basin, with a limited number from the volcanic turbidite facies (Unit II) and the pelagic clay facies (Unit V). Minerals of the smectite group are gener… Show more

“…However, on this >20 Ma lithosphere, the highest temperatures in the sediments (i.e., at the base of the sediment column) at Sites C0011 and C0012 are projected to be 79 °C and 64 °C, respectively (Expedition 333 Scientists, 2012a; Expedition 333 Scientists, 2012b). Consistent with those results, the clay-mineral assemblages at these sites show no significant smectite-to-illite reaction progress (Underwood and Guo, 2013;Underwood and Guo, 2017).…”

“…Underwood and Guo (, ) documented the clay mineral assemblages at IODP Sites C0011 and C0012 (Figure ). Just as at Site 1177, they found no empirical evidence for a diagenetic overprint, and both IODP sites yield similar stratigraphic trends in mineral assemblages.…”

“…The core samples and logging data used in this study were acquired at Sites C0006 (Expedition 314 Scientists, 2009a; Expedition 316 Scientists, 2009a) and C0024 (Yamaguchi et al., 2020) in the prism toe, Sites C0001 (Expedition 314 Scientists, 2009b; Expedition 315 Scientists, 2009a) and C0004 (Expedition 314 Scientists, 2009a; Expedition 316 Scientists, 2009b) on the outer ridges, and Sites C0002 (Expedition 314 Scientists, 2009b; Expedition 315 Scientists, 2009b; Strasser et al., 2014b; Tobin et al., 2015; Kitajima et al., 2020) and C0009 (Expedition 319 Scientists, 2010a) in the Kumano Basin (Figure 2). Clay and smectite fractions in sediments were measured by Expedition 319 Scientists (2010a), Guo and Underwood (2012), Underwood (2017a, 2017b), Underwood and Guo (2013, 2017), Underwood and Song (2016), and Yamaguchi et al. (2020).…”
