DC-Pulsed Plasma for Dry Reforming of Methane to Synthesis Gas

Abstract: The carbon dioxide reforming of methane to synthesis gas under DC-pulsed plasma was investigated. The effects of specific input energy and feed ratio on the product distribution and also feed conversion was studied. At the input energy of about 11 eV/ molecule per methane and/or carbon dioxide the feed conversion of 38% for CH 4 and 28% for CO 2 and product selectivity of 74% has been attained for H 2 and CO at feed flow rate of 90 ml/min. The energy consumption in this work displays potential to further study… Show more

“…When carbon dioxide alone is used in gas flow, CO 2 dissociates by collision with energetic electrons leading to the formation of CO, O 2 and C through many reactions [23] depending on the energy level of the electrons.…”

“…The rather low selectivity in carbon monoxide (especially with undiluted CO 2 ) proves that some carbonaceous undetected products are formed which could be a carbon deposit resulting from direct carbon formation by CO 2 , CO dissociation or from the Boudouard reaction [23] (2CO ! C + CO 2 ), but the rather low partial pressure of CO in the gas mixture which does not favor this bimolecular reaction and the almost constant value of CO selectivity whatever the conversion make this reaction unlikely.…”

“…It may be noted that greater presence of CO 2 in biogas seemed to encourage higher CO yields and selectivity as well as higher CH 4 conversion. Possible reaction of biogas reforming at high concentration of CO 2 is [20,21]; Increased CO yields were observed with decreasing content of O 2 . However, in this work, the observed changes were relatively small.…”
