Abstract: En el artículo se revisa una amplia bibliografía acerca del conjunto de argumentos para justificar el apoyo con fondos públicos a las artes y la cultura. Desde la presencia de condiciones particulares en la oferta ("enfermedad de los costes"), o en la demanda (bienes públicos), la existencia de preferencias comunitarias (bien de mérito), hasta la aportación a la actividad económica y al empleo (Estudios de Impacto Económico de la Cultura).
