Debye-scale solitary structures measured in a beam-plasma laboratory experiment

Abstract: Abstract. Solitary electrostatic pulses have been observed in numerous places of the magnetosphere such as the vicinity of reconnection current sheets, shocks or auroral current systems, and are often thought to be generated by energetic electron beams. We present results of a series of experiments conducted at the UCLA large plasma device (LAPD) where a suprathermal electron beam was injected parallel to a static magnetic field. Micro-probes with tips smaller than a Debye length enabled the detection of solit… Show more

“…For example, ESWs have been reported at Earth's magnetopause [Cattell et al, 2002;Matsumoto et al, 2003], magnetotail Cattell et al, 2005;Khotyaintsev et al, 2010b], auroral regions [Ergun et al, 1998a[Ergun et al, , 1998bMozer et al, 2015], magnetosheath , near the foreshock [Behlke et al, 2004;Shin et al, 2008], and in the solar wind [Mangeney et al, 1999;Malaspina et al, 2013]. ESWs are also observed in laboratory experiments [Fox et al, 2008;Lefebvre et al, 2011]. At the magnetopause and magnetotail ESWs are often argued to be associated with magnetic reconnection [Lapenta et al, 2011].…”

“…4(a) at low n b /n 0 can be understood from linear growth rate estimates, given the dependence on the density ratio (n b /n 0 ) α (α = 1/3 for a beam, α = 1 for a bi-Maxwellian plasma). We should note that, although we launched a gyrating beam into the background plasma, the electron distribution function is redistributed to have a long tail up to the beam energy by other processes [23,[33][34][35].…”

“…In an effort to clarify this issue, laboratory experiments were carried out in the LArge Plasma Device (LAPD) at the University of California-Los Angeles. For a discussion of those experiments and the complementary simulations, the reader is referred to Lefebvre et al (2011).…”
