Decavanadate Cage-like Cluster Templated by Organic Counter Cation: Synthesis, Characterization and Its Antimicrobial Effect Against Gram Positive E. Feacium

Abstract: Decavanadate cluster templated with organic cation, [4-(CH 3 O)C 6 H 4 CH 2 NH 3 ] 6 V 10 O 28 Á2H 2 O (4MBAV10) has been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction and IR., UV-Vis., fluorescence and 1 H, 13 C-NMR spectroscopies. The X-ray structure determination revealed the discrete decavanadate cage-like clusters [V 10 O 28 ] 6-(V10). These polymeric species associated to lattice water resultsn stacked parallel to the (a,b) plane where the templating cations filled the interlayer sp… Show more

“…The FTIR spectra registered for products I and II (Figure S4 and assignments in Table S5) show bands characteristic of oxidovanadium compounds from 970 to 550 cm –1 attributed to ν(V = O), ν as (VOV), ν s (VOV), and δ(VOV). ,, Bands related to the organic cations can also be observed between 1670 and 1630 cm –1 for ν(CO) and δ(NH 2 ), and three bands in the range of 1390 to 1240 cm –1 refer to δ(C–H) from the pyridine ring . In the Raman spectra (Figure S5 and Table S6), the decavanadate bands are found from 960 to 200 cm –1 .…”

“…There are few literature studies on the toxicity of V 10 salts with organic cations, or their breakdown products in culture media, toward Gram-positive and/or Gram-negative bacteria; some of them are qualitative only. Inhibitory activity was observed when solutions of decavanadate with 4-methoxybenzylammonium 15 and tert-butylammonium 16 were added respectively to Gram-positive Enterococcus feacium and Streptococcus pneumoniae. For S. pneumoniae, the response was dependent on the nature of the oxidovanadium compound, 16 with MIC (minimum inhibitory concentrations) of 4−8 μg mL −1 for (tert-BuNH 3 ) 6 [V 10 O 28 ] and of 8−16 μg mL −1 for Na 3 VO 4 .…”

“…The biological activity of decavanadate (V10) had been extensively reviewed [6-7, 10-11, 26] with potential use in anticancer [27][28] anti-diabetic therapies [29][30] and antibacterial activity [31]. V10 is known to modulate the activity of many proteins such as phosphatases [32], , myosin [33][34] and calcium pump ATPase [35][36] and to interact with proteins such as actin [26,37,38].…”

“…For instance, it was described that rat adipocytes accumulate much more glucose upon decavanadate incubation than with known insulin mimetic agents such as bis(maltolato)oxovanadium(IV) (BMOV) [ 14 ]. Besides the insulin mimetic behavior, decavanadate and recent decavanadate compounds show several pharmacological activities such as anticancer, antibacterial, and antivirus [ 2 , 15 17 ]. These recent findings, which are now briefly reviewed, are evaluated and several hypotheses and V 10 modes of action through oxidative stress, effects in mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and cytoskeleton, among other biological and pharmacological activities are analyzed.…”
