Deciphering the genetic basis for vitamin E accumulation in leaves and grains of different barley accessions

Abstract: Tocopherols and tocotrienols, commonly referred to as vitamin E, are essential compounds in food and feed. Due to their lipophilic nature they protect biomembranes by preventing the propagation of lipid-peroxidation especially during oxidative stress. Since their synthesis is restricted to photosynthetic organisms, plant-derived products are the major source of natural vitamin E. In the present study the genetic basis for high vitamin E accumulation in leaves and grains of different barley ( Hordeu… Show more

“…Interestingly, the mean AT3 levels showed a difference of ∼4 μg between the two panels, but higher levels of this metabolite were found in the WBDC panel. It has been reported that in mature barley grains, 20% of the total tocopherol pool and 40% of the total tocotrienol pool are comprised of their respective γ‐tocochromanol isoforms (Schuy et al., 2019). In our analysis, we found that 50% of the total tocopherol and total tocotrienol pools in both the WBDC and mini‐core panels comprised the AT and AT3 forms, respectively.…”

“…Three studies of the QTLs associated with tocols in barley have been reported (Graebner et al., 2015; Oliver et al., 2014; Schuy et al., 2019). All three studies indicated that the distal region of chromosome 7 harbors a major QTL associated with tocols in barley.…”

“…Indeed, for instance, wheat germ oils contain the highest concentration of vitamin E of all species tested ( Trela and Szymańska, 2019 ). Although substantial efforts have been made in elucidating the metabolic pathway of vitamin metabolism in other crops ( Zhou et al., 2012 ; Quadrana et al., 2014 ; Liu et al., 2017 ; Wang et al., 2018 ; Schuy et al., 2019 ; Zhang et al., 2019 ), less has been achieved in wheat ( Li et al., 2018b ; Watkins et al., 2019 ). In view of this, key candidate genes could be swiftly selected and validated through multi-omics approaches including metabolomics, providing molecular resources for breeding wheat to be a more nutritional food.…”

“…Li et al used a GWAS to analyze a panel of 166 bread wheat cultivars by assaying 18 207 SNP markers to identify chromosomal regions associated with vitamin thiamin and riboflavin contents. More recently, Schuy et al identified two genes that code for key enzymes controlling the accumulation of tocopherol in leaves and tocotrienol in grains of different barley accessions using a GWAS.…”
