Declines in anogenital warts diagnoses since the change in 2012 to use the quadrivalent HPV vaccine in England: data to end 2017

Abstract: ObjectivesIn 2008, a national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme for females was introduced in England using the bivalent vaccine (HPV16 and 18 only). In 2012, the programme changed to offer the quadrivalent vaccine that includes protection against the two HPV types that cause the majority of anogenital warts (AGW; HPV6 and 11). We present data reporting AGW diagnoses in sexual health clinics (SHCs) in England to the end of 2017, including diagnoses among birth cohorts offered the quadrivalent va… Show more

“…Participants were vaccinated either with the quadrivalent HPV (types 6, 11, 16 and 18) vaccine (vaccinated group) or with placebo (aluminium hydroxyphosphate sulphate adjuvant) by three doses of intramuscular injection. The vaccine was composed of [17,[27][28][29][30][31][32][33] were included in the present meta-analysis. Five studies [27][28][29][30][31] were performed in Australia, one [17] in Belgium, one [32] in England, and one [33] in the USA ( Table 2).…”

“…These vaccines have led to a significant decline in AGW incidence in countries that have managed to achieve high vaccination coverage rates. 1626 HPV vaccination has also been used off-label for the treatment of recalcitrant common warts. 27 , 28 However, HPV vaccination has created considerable controversy and the vaccination rates are low in many countries.…”

“…6 Furthermore, data from England, Australia and elsewhere suggest a herd protection effect, with a decline in the incidence of genital warts among young women and heterosexual men. [7][8][9][10] However, men who have sex with men (MSM) are likely to have little or no herd protection from vaccinating only women and will continue to have a high risk of HPV infection and related diseases. 11 12 We have previously published data on the prevalence of current HPV infection, determined by HPV DNA detection, among MSM attending a London sexual health clinic.…”
