Decoupling and Decomposition Analysis of Carbon Emissions from Electric Output in the United States

Abstract: Abstract:The rapid growth of the electricity sector in the United States has been accompanied by a dramatic rise in CO 2 emissions. To understand the driving effects that contribute to the increase in CO 2 emissions during electricity generation, as well as the relationship between the emissions and electricity output, a novel decoupling index on the basis of the multilevel logarithmic mean divisia index (LMDI) method is presented in this paper. The results of our study indicate that, on the one hand, the elec… Show more

“…Emissions occur as a result of combustion processes for power generation (thermal and electrical) and torch gas burning. The main substances emitted in these activities are nitrogen (NOx) and sulfur (SOx) oxides, carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), total hydrocarbons (HCT), and the following greenhouse gases: Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxides (N2O) [51][52][53]. The Stage 2 EIA has the following average GHG estimates ( Table 2 and Table 3):…”

“…In pre-salt fields, the amount of gas that is allowed to burn corresponds to a volume equal to or less than 3% of the monthly NG production associated with the field. The main substances emitted are greenhouse gases: CO2, CH4, N2O, and HCT, as well as NOx, SOx, CO, and PM [7,52,53].…”

“…Emerging evidence also suggests ambient air pollution may result to diabetes and neurological development in children. Some air pollutants and particulate matter from cars can be deposited on soil and surface waters where they enter the food chain; these substances can affect the reproductive, respiratory, immune and neurological systems of animals and even humans (Jiang and Li, 2017). The core objective of this study is to apply basic statistical techniques for the spatial analysis of gaseous pollutants from vehicular emission in some parts of Benin City Metropolis.…”

“…Then, the changes in environmental effects in the period can be decomposed into several driving forces by LMDI method or other kinds of models. Similar studies in decomposition of change in energy consumption [15] and CO 2 emissions [16][17][18] have been implemented in different countries and regions. Second, estimating accumulative effects of stock for a long period or in a special process, which is directly related to environmental or climate outcomes.…”
