Decreased Peripheral Naïve T Cell Number and Its Role in Predicting Cardiovascular and Infection Events in Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at high risk of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and infectious diseases, which have been found to be associated with a disturbed immune response. Accelerated T-cell senescence is prevalent in these patients and considered a significant factor contributing to increased risk of various morbidities. Nevertheless, few studies have explicated the relevance of T-cell senescence to these fatal morbidities in ESRD patients. In this study, we designed a longi… Show more

“…The ability to mount effective immune responses to a variety of novel pathogens depends on the presence of naive T cells, which develop in the thymus, with a diverse TCR repertoire 42 . However, under physiological conditions, the number of circulating naive T cells decreases gradually after the age of 40 years owing to age-associated thymic involution and the consequent decrease in thymic output 43 .…”

“…All these conditions, characterized by a loss of telomere length, reduced expression of activation antigens, and impaired proliferative capacity, could be related to a stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) process, involving changes in the function and morphology of cells in response to the chronic inflammatory process [76].…”

“…A reduction of naïve T cell could be a strong predictor of CVEs [cardiovascular events] and infection episodes in HD patients." Xiang et al (2021) disturbed immune response; T-cell senescence; cardiovascular events; CVEs; systemic inflammation; C-reactive protein; naïve T cell levels; tumor necrosis factor-α; interleukin 6; central memory T cell; T effector memory CD45RA cell; CD4 + ; CD8 + ; inflammation; infection IIC “results showed an association between fibrinolytic/endothelial cell function and increased inflammatory markers in CKD patients. The increased levels of Ddimer, tPA and inflammatory markers in CKD patients using a CVC, led us to propose a relationship between the type of VA chosen for HD, and the risk of thrombogenesis."…”
