The tracer injection is controlled by iontophoresis using Pt electrodes in the vicinity of the outlet of the microfluidic channel. Using 3-5 µA, 5-7 s on/off cycle and 15-20 min total injection time the localized injection resulted in clear anterograde and retrograde BDA labeling both within the cortex and in subcortical structures. Anterograde and retrograde labeling revealed the fine details of neuronal processes including dendritic spines and axon terminal-like endings. Injection sites appeared clear lacking any strong diffuse background labeling. Electrophysiological recording performed with the same microdevice immediately after the iontophoresis indicated normal cortical functioning. The results prove that the combination of in vivo multichannel neural recording and controlled tracer injection using a single implanted microdevice is feasible, and therefore it can be a powerful tool for studying the connectome of the brain.

Microfabrication and nanotechnology have significantly expanded the technological capabilities for monitoring and modulating neural activity with the goal of studying the nervous system and managing neurological disorders. This feature article initially provides a tutoriallike review of the prominent technologies for enabling this two-way communication with the nervous system via electrical, chemical, and optical means. Following this overview, the article discusses emerging high-throughput methods for identifying device attributes that enhance the functionality of interfaces. The discussion then extends into opportunities and challenges in integrating different device functions within a small footprint with the goal of closed-loop control of neural activity with high spatiotemporal resolution and reduced adverse tissue response. The article concludes with an outline of future directions in the development and applications of multifunctional neural interfaces.

Injectable Biomedical Devices for Sensing and Stimulating Internal Body Organs

The rapid pace of progress in implantable electronics driven by novel technology has created devices with unconventional designs and features to reduce invasiveness and establish new sensing and stimulating techniques. Among the designs, injectable forms of biomedical electronics are explored for accurate and safe targeting of deep‐seated body organs. Here, the classes of biomedical electronics and tools that have high aspect ratio structures designed to be injected or inserted into internal organs for minimally invasive monitoring and therapy are reviewed. Compared with devices in bulky or planar formats, the long shaft‐like forms of implantable devices are easily placed in the organs with minimized outward protrusions via injection or insertion processes. Adding flexibility to the devices also enables effortless insertions through complex biological cavities, such as the cochlea, and enhances chronic reliability by complying with natural body movements, such as the heartbeat. Diverse types of such injectable implants developed for different organs are reviewed and the electronic, optoelectronic, piezoelectric, and microfluidic devices that enable stimulations and measurements of site‐specific regions in the body are discussed. Noninvasive penetration strategies to deliver the miniscule devices are also considered. Finally, the challenges and future directions associated with deep body biomedical electronics are explained.
