Deep learning in ultrasound elastography imaging: A review

Abstract: It is known that changes in the mechanical properties of tissues are associated with the onset and progression of certain diseases. Ultrasound elastography is a technique to characterize tissue stiffness using ultrasound imaging either by measuring tissue strain using quasi‐static elastography or natural organ pulsation elastography, or by tracing a propagated shear wave induced by a source or a natural vibration using dynamic elastography. In recent years, deep learning has begun to emerge in ultrasound elast… Show more

“…[ 31 , 32 ] The underlying mechanism of elastography is the characterization of tissue stiffness using ultrasound imaging. [ 33 ] In this study, compared with the DL-grayscale model based on grayscale ultrasound images, the DL-elastography model based on elastography images achieved better diagnostic performance. This phenomenon demonstrates that elastography images could provide added value for improving the diagnostic performance of DL models.…”

“…Even though the clinical significance of this study is limited in comparison with studies were Young's modulus, Poisson s ratio, and others parameters, are estimated [30] [32], the rotation elastogram is a direct estimation of the macro-mechanical behavior of benign tumors as fibroadenomas and may be used as a complementary parameter to improve the breast tumor diagnosis using ultrasound elastography. Furthermore, the use of machine and deep learning methods can improve tissue motion estimation, which can become relevant for enhancing the quality of RE image [33].…”
