Deep Neck Infection With Thyroid Abscess by Esbl-Producing Klebsiella Pneumoniae: An Unusual Case

Abstract

Thyroid abscess is a rare clinical condition. A prompt diagnosis is important because it may progress rapidly into a life-threatening condition. The common causative organisms responsible for thyroid abscess are Staphylococci and Streptococci species. We present a very unusual case of a diabetic patient, without previous thyroid disease, showing clinical symptoms of thyroid abscess associated with a deep neck infection (prevertebral space), both caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. A delay in diagnosis of morbidities associated with a thyroid abscess may result in rapid exacerbation of this condition. Therefore, prompt and appropriate treatment is mandatory for a successful outcome.
