In this work, we employed the Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction in a study of point defect formation in intermetallic phases of the B2 structure of the Fe-Al system as a function of Al concentration. The results are compared with the concentrations of point defect determined from positron annihilation data. In the Mössbauer effect, two types of samples are investigated: Fe-Al alloys with few additives obtained by induction melting and Al-rich metallic powders produced by the self-decomposition method and intensive grinding of high energy in the electro-magneto-mechanical mill. We present the values of the 57 Fe isomer shift and quadrupole splitting for the components describing the point defect in the local environment of a Mössbauer nuclide. The concentration of the Fe vacancies and Fe atoms substituting Al (Fe-AS) are determined. The results showed that an increase in Al content causes an increase in vacancy and Fe-AS concentration.

A model is proposed for directly determining the volume of lattice vacancies by means of dilatometric measurements of the anisotropic irreversible length change which occurs during annealing of lattice vacancies at grain boundaries of shape-anisotropic crystallites. The model is tested using nanocrystalline Ni after the high-pressure torsion deformation which exhibits excess concentration of lattice vacancies and elongated crystallite shape. Different length changes upon annealing parallel and perpendicular to the elongation axis occur from which a vacancy volume can be derived.

The concentrations of quenched‐in vacancies in Fe‐Al and Fe‐Al‐Cr systems after their various thermal treatment were studied by positron lifetime spectroscopy. The experimental data were analyzed with the 2‐state trapping model directly implemented to the code of the computer program (LT‐9 2). The number of quenched‐in vacancies strongly depends on the rate of quenching. For fast quenched samples the atomic concentration is of order of 10–4 and it radically falls after annealing at 500 °C for 0.5 h. A comparison of Fe28Al and Fe28Al5Cr samples, after analogical heat treatment, showed that chromium addition caused a systematical decrease of the resistant vacancy concentrations. In the samples that were slowly cooled after quenching at 1000 °C the positrons are trapped at precipitates of minor alloying elements. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
