Defensive eversible organ in swallowtail larvae: morphology, structure, chemistry and defensive efficacy

Abstract: Chemical secretions are one of the main defensive mechanisms in insects. The osmeterium is a unique organ in larvae of Papilionidae (Lepidoptera), which is everted upon disturbance, secreting odoriferous volatiles.
