Defining and Evaluating Use Cases for Battery Energy Storage Investments: Case Study in Croatia

Abstract: Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and renewable energy sources are complementary technologies from the power system viewpoint, where renewable energy sources behave as flexibility sinks and create business opportunities for BESS as flexibility sources. Various stakeholders can use BESS to balance, stabilize and flatten demand/generation patterns. These applications depend on the stakeholder role, flexibility service needed from the battery, market opportunities and obstacles, as well as regulatory aspects … Show more

“…For such a large project as the one studied (of 50 MW), the profit could be approximately EUR 60,000,000. An investment of a large scale battery system that costs around 3–4 MEUR 41 would have a very short payback period, especially in the case of serving and selling the curtailed wind power to the local community.…”

“…Particularly, countries with widely diversified RE potential and/or little international HV grid interconnections carry for this reason high potential for such applications. In some cases, due to the topography of an area or areas facing public oppositions caused by new HV power lines in or through urban areas, BESS is considered a solution, regardless if it is a less financially favorable option [97].…”

“…In [18], hybrid energy storage systems, including BESSs, are addressed, by determining the energy storage capacity in distribution systems through an assessment of the risk tolerance of the investors. The results of BESS installations in terms of providing different services at different voltage levels are reported in [19].…”
