Defining Cognitive Reserve and Implications for Cognitive Aging

Abstract: Purpose of Review-The aim of this review is to summarize current conceptual models of cognitive reserve (CR) and related concepts and to discuss evidence for these concepts within the context of aging and Alzheimer's disease.Recent Findings-Evidence to date supports the notion that higher levels of CR, as measured by proxy variables reflective of lifetime experiences, are associated with better cognitive performance, and with a reduced risk of incident mild cognitive impairment/dementia. However, the impact of… Show more

“…For instance, better social-economic states are more supportive of accomplishing a higher education level, which may bring occupational attainment and good lifestyles. 23 However, our findings are noteworthy because our model allows an estimate of the time point of each individual patient in the disease trajectory using CDR-SB according to the level of education. The findings might have relevance in establishing public policies for AD.…”

“…This is unlikely a result of screening or diagnostic bias as all neuropsychological tests have been corrected for education. Some researchers believe that education can enhance the brain's ability to make e cient use of cognitive networks [130,131] . Furthermore, those who live alone are more likely to have MCI.…”
