Defining Supply Chain Visibility for Industrial Construction Projects

Abstract: Good Supply Chain Visibility (SCV) is vital for on-time delivery and installation of materials on industrial construction projects. SCV is possible via the exchange of information about materials in the supply chain. Prior academic research has highlighted the importance of SCV. However, the literature lacks the detailed definition of visibility that can be easily applied to projects. This research reviewed prior studies on SCV and adopted an appropriate definition that supports relevant decision-making on ind… Show more

“…Such lessons learned can be used to develop the necessary capabilities to detect and avoid modern slavery in their construction sites. In addition, research should also be devoted to studying how construction projects can develop a routine for regular inspections and a rigorous and comprehensive auditing system for lower tiers of low-profile contractors (Dharmapalan et al, 2021) who are more likely to engage in modern slavery. Therefore, although the literature suggests that organizations, such as clients and main contractors, can play a key role in preventing subcontractors from using modern slavery, there is still very limited understanding on the why and how.…”

“…Supply chain integration necessitates enhanced 'visibility' through the value chain, i.e., logistics and operational systems must be integrated through efficient information-sharing mechanisms. Supply chain visibility concerns capturing and analyzing timely and accurate supply chain data that informs decision-making, mitigates risk, and improves processes [95]. Supply chain visibility demands trust and cooperation among trading partners [68].…”
