Deformation of metallic glasses: Recent developments in theory, simulations, and experiments

Abstract: We review recent research into elastic and plastic deformation of metallic glasses, with an emphasis on making connections between developments in theory and simulation (largely from the physics community) and experimental results (largely from the metallurgy community). Topics covered include strain measurement via scattering techniques, non-affine atomic displacements during elastic deformation, shear transformations, constitutive equations, shear bands, and strain hardening. Where possible we connect the ob… Show more

“…Differences in the cooling rate of metallic glasses upon casting from the melt result in different final energy states of the amorphous solid 6 . Higher cooling rates allow freezing of the metallic glass at a higher potential energy level 1 , and it was established that metallic glasses on higher energy state have a higher plasticity 5 . Ribbon samples can be bent by 180°without fracture 7 .…”

“…Metallic glass Nanoindentation Strain rate Indentation size effect Metallic glasses have been long regarded as potential structural materials due to their ultra-high strength and hardness [1,2]. Therefore, a number of researchers have paid much attention to the factors that will influence the hardness of metallic glass [3][4][5].…”

“…Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are amorphous solids that are well known for their excellent mechanical properties, which render them attractive for many technological applications [1][2][3][4]. Although these materials are heavily investigated both experimentally and theoretically, the yielding and failure of BMGs under external strain are still not fully understood.…”
