Deinstitutionalization for Long-Term Mental Illness: A 6-Year Evaluation

Abstract: The residents maintained community tenure with significant improvement in quality of life and a reduction in medication, supported by a mental health system with adequate community resources. Issues regarding continuing rehabilitation and social integration need to be addressed. Further deinstitutionalization will require 24-h supervision for most initially and for some on a continuing basis. An ageing population will require specific age related medical and psychiatric services.

“…Although the possibility of a broader study encompassing other CCUs could be considered in the future, following the initial study by Trauer et al (2001), the opportunity was taken to make this in-depth study of the Footbridge CCU cohort. Fourth outcomes of comparable groups may vary in other settings beyond Victoria, depending on the availability of community resources and the length of tenure that patients may expect at residential rehabilitation services (Trieman and Leff 2002;Hobbs et al 2002). Fifth, the perspectives of family members and also treating clinicians were not included.…”

“…The remaining ten patients were residents of supported residential services, and of note four patients (Brenda, Paul, William, Matthew (deceased)) were all co-residents in one particular facility. While many people with similar disabilities prefer small group homes to larger institutional settings (Hobbs et al 2002;Nelson et al 1999;Newton et al 2000), such residences are a scarce resource in Victoria. Some patients expressed clearly an impoverishment in social relationships as a result of changes in institutional care settings.…”
