Delayed benefits for fallow bucks: more fights decrease same day mating success, but may increase matings the next day

Abstract: Dominance hierarchies help to reduce unnecessary fights and associated costs during the mating season. Fallow deer (Dama dama) typically have high levels of male-male competition and strong reproductive skew. Nevertheless, how male dominance and daily fight rates affect mating success remains unknown. We used a two-year dataset from a large population of tagged fallow deer (620-689 individuals), to calculate male dominance ranks based on their agonistic interactions prior to the mating season (‘prerut’), in or… Show more

“…Some behavioural variables (i.e., avoid and displacements), which constituted the social tension and general dominance personality traits, are often used in combination with other behaviours, such as agonistic interactions, to construct dominance hierarchies 63 . However, we found that these direct interactions were very rare during scans, leading > 94% 'unknown' dominance rank relationships among the individuals.…”

“…This allows individuals to evaluate their chances of winning a conflict, avoid injury risk and avoid unnecessary costs of time or energy loss by limiting conflict escalation (Holekamp & Strauss, 2016). An individual's position in the hierarchy affects its resource access, reproductive success, and health, with higher dominance status expected to confer net fitness benefits (Archie et al, 2012;Bateman-Neubert et al, 2023;Blomquist et al, 2011;Majolo et al, 2012). Assessing the hierarchy of a population allows further examination of sociality, as dominance also affects movement leadership and the distribution of affiliation and aggression within the group (Hobson et al, 2021;Šárová et al, 2010).…”
