Delayed Crosslink Polymer Flowing Gel System for Water Shutoff in Conventional and Unconventional Oil and Gas Reservoirs

Abstract: A new polymer based gel system has been developed to address the excessive water production problem in fractured unconventional gas wells. Currently available polymer based water shut-off agents are unsuitable for treating high temperature hydraulically-fractured tight gas and shale reservoirs, where some fractures connect to water rich zones. The new gel developed is a low-concentration, low-viscosity delayed-crosslink polymeric gel system and is a significant improvement over traditional flowing gels used fo… Show more

“…Furthermore, the gelation time must be long enough for the gelling system to reach the proposed targets (highpermeability zones or anomalies). This injectivity and propagation parameter parameter can be obtained by bottle tests and continuous and oscillatory rheological tests [45];…”

“…However, the retarding effect of NaCl was not satisfactory, while the addition of NH 4 Cl reduced the gel strength significantly. Jayakumar et al pretreated PEI with AMPS or dextran sulfate (DS), respectively, and then cross-linked with partly hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA), which significantly extended the gelation time of PHPA/PEI gel system [ 23 , 24 ]. This approach is not conducive to large-scale application in oilfields due to the inconvenience of preparation and high cost.…”
