Delayed Gadolinium-enhanced MR to Determine Glycosaminoglycan Concentration in Reparative Cartilage after Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation: Preliminary Results

Abstract: Study results indicate that pre- and postcontrast imaging is necessary for delayed gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging evaluation of reparative cartilage after ACI.

“…Using this index as a metric of GAG distribution assumes that in the absence of contrast T 1 , is relatively constant. While this generally holds for native tissue (169), it may not hold for tissue engineered or implant tissue, where the hydration may vary substantially (183). Therefore, obtaining information regarding cartilage composition depends upon measurement of MR relaxation times, T 2 , T 1rho and T 1 .…”

“…4,5 To obtain a better insight into the ultrastructural composition of the cartilage repair tissue, biochemical MRI techniques have shown promising results in recent studies. [6][7][8] For the assessment of the constitution and organization of healthy articular cartilage as well as cartilage repair tissue, delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and the mapping of transverse relaxation times (T2-mapping) are most often utilized. Whereas the dGEMRIC technique can visualize the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) component of articular cartilage, T2 mapping focuses on changes in water and collagen content and tissue anisotropy.…”
