Delignification of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch using Peracetic Acid and Alkaline Peroxide Combined with the Ultrasound

Abstract: Lignocellulosic biomass has great potential as a low-cost source of fermentable sugar for the production of biofuels and high value organic acids. One potential biomass is oil palm empty fruit bunch, since it has high cellulose and hemicellulose content. However, its lignin content can hinder the access of cellulose and hemicellulose during the hydrolysis process. Therefore, an effective pretreatment for the delignification of lignocellulose biomass should be considered to reduce the lignin content. In this st… Show more

“…Alkali or alkali mixtures have been typically used in wood color control studies; however, this study used PAA solutions so that the data can be used to compare alkali conditions and acid conditions (Hermansyah et al, 2019). cellulose C-O peak at 1,020-1,030 cm -1 indicates strong absorption and is not greatly affected, as revealed by FT-IR (Rosu et al, 2010).…”

“…Further pretreatment using AP solution was carried out by mixing 10 g of pretreated OPEFB with 200 mL AP solution (20 mL of AP solution per gram of OPEFB) in a 500 mL Duran glass bottle. Modi ed pretreatment was conducted inside an ultrasonic processor (53 kHz, 90W), at the temperature of 35°C for 10 hours (Hermansyah et al 2019). Nevertheless, non-modi ed pretreatment was carried out in the shaker water bath for 12 hours.…”

“…The degradation of fiber and dissolving of lignin can be predominantly found in the intermediate cooking and bleaching process. The medium consistency oxygen delignification system as intermediate process completed by using chemical treatments, including acidic and basic treatments (Hermansyah et al, 2019). The alkaline treatment is an efficient method for delignification (Harahap et al, 2019), especially using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to influence the physical properties of the fibers.…”
