Delineating the Coral Triangle

Abstract: Spatial analyses of coral distributions at species level delineate the Coral Triangle and provide new insights into patterns of diversity and endemism around the globe. This study shows that the Coral Triangle, an area extending from the Philippines to the Solomon Islands, has 605 zooxanthellate corals including 15 regional endemics. This amounts to 76% of the world's total species complement, giving this province the world's highest conservation priority. Within the Coral Triangle, highest richness resides in… Show more

“…This is approximately 17 % of the overall predicted coral diversity for this region, which is expected to be between 540 and 550 species (Burke et al 2002;Veron et al 2009). When compared with previous studies (Wood , 1994Ditlev et al 1999), the present study adds 24 new records to this area, 12 of which are new for the whole of Sabah.…”

“…High concentrations of reefs are found in the Banggi group of islands in the north and in the Semporna islands reef complex in the southeast of Sabah, both of which are within the Coral Triangle (Veron et al 2009). The first mention of Semporna's corals was in relation to using raised coral limestone as building materials (Fitch 1950;Roe 1951).…”

“…The southern delimitation for this region might seem more arbitrary because there is a thermal and biological continuity as indicated by the so-called Coral Triangle extending beyond the region for this checklist (Veron et al 2009(Veron et al , 2011. Therefore, defining the northern warm water limit would be problematic but we are excluding the Yellow Sea (Jin et al 2003), and used the 25° C isotherm (Liu 2013), setting an imaginary borderline running from Shangai, China to Jeju Island, and then to Tsushima islands, Japan.…”

“…The world's most species rich coastal ecosystems occur within the Coral Triangle (Veron et al 2009), a region which includes all or part of six Indo-Pacific countries; Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia (Sabah), Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Coral reefs are one of the most important ecosystems in marine and coastal areas.…”
