Demographic and Sexual Behavior Characteristics of Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) Registered in a Targeted Intervention (TI) Program in India

Abstract: Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) contribute substantially to HIV prevalence in India. The targeted intervention (TI) program is the most important link between MSM and the public health system. Hence, we studied the demographic and sexual behavior characteristics of MSM registered in TI program in India. Methods: We used information maintained at TI sites under the program catering exclusively to MSM in India. “…We partnered with The Humsafar Trust to adapt an online survey of MSM and HIV, 7 translate the survey into Hindi, and refine it to ensure conceptual accuracy. 8 We assessed sexual identity with categories used in India (panthi, kothi, double-decker, gay/homosexual, bisexual, and straight/heterosexual), 911 but because very few respondents selected panthi, kothi, or double-decker, we reclassified these as gay/homosexual. We asked about past six-month anal sex and condomless anal sex (CAS), and about past 12-month number and types of sexual partners, drug/alcohol use during sex, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).…”

“…1 As of now, no specific health related program has been launched for sex workers although a major role is being played by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) where National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) evolve and revolve around its twin objective of bringing about HIV prevention and providing treatment to people living with HIV including high risk groups (HRGs) such as female sex workers (FSWs). 2 NACP is a 100% centrally sponsored project 3, which through the State AIDS Prevention and Control Societies (SACS) and various nongovernment organizations (NGOs) guides prevention programme at state, district and village level. 2 Under Punjab State AIDS Prevention and Control Society (PSACS), there are 59 targeted intervention project (TIs) in Punjab catering to the needs of various high risk groups out of which 32 are solely working for female commercial sex workers (FCSWs).…”

“…[ 1 ] The most vulnerable population to HIV/AIDS being Female Sex Workers (FSWs), Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgenders (TGs) and Injecting Drug Users (IDUs). [ 2 ] The former category is fairly simple to identify as it consists of marginalized sections of the population that often take part in sexual risk behavior, e.g., commercial sex workers (CSWs) or injecting drug users. [ 3 ] There is an evidence that many epidemiological and behavioral determinants which make High Risk Group vulnerable to HIV transmission among core groups can lead to increase burden of disease among them.…”
