Demographic response to patch destruction in a spatially structured amphibian population

Abstract: Economic activities such as logging and mineral extraction can result in the creation of new anthropogenic habitats that host specific biodiversity, including protected species. However, the legislation in many Western European countries requires the rehabilitation of “damaged” areas following logging and mining operations, which can eliminate these early successional habitats. Conservation managers face a dilemma in these situations, but often lack knowledge about the impacts of environmental rehabilitation o… Show more

“…We performed population matrix modelling in popbio r package (Stubben & Milligan, ) to compute deterministic population growth rate and elasticities for each population. Based on the most realistic life cycle for B. variegata (Cayuela et al, , ; Cayuela, Gillet, et al, ), we considered a three age‐class (juvenile, subadult, adult), female‐dominant, pre‐breeding matrix (Caswell, ). Fecundity F was possible for adults only and consisted of an estimation of recruitment, that is, the number of recruited juvenile females at t per breeding female at t − 1.…”

“…Access to the site is strictly controlled, which avoids common threats that are contributing to the decline in B. variegata (i.e., habitat loss caused by agriculture and urban development Cayuela et al. , ). The relocation site is a mosaic of grassland and woodland areas (Denoël et al.…”
